Overview

"The study of the Reformation in England and Wales, Ireland and Scotland has traditionally been treated as part of a separate series of national histories. Reformation in Britain and Ireland draws upon the growing genre of writing about British history to construct an innovative narrative of religious change in the sixteenth century. The diverse experiences of the four countries (or three kingdoms) faced with the challenge of the Lutheran Reformation and Henry VIII's break with Rome are here studied in a single text. The separate political and ecclesiastical stories of Britain and Ireland are given due weight, but the author argues that interaction between the various realms is also essential to understanding religious reform." The volume investigates doctrinal change; the methods by which populations were evangelized; and religious attitudes and responses to Protestantism among clergy and laity. It follows prevailing historiographical arguments in seeing the late medieval Church as popular, while emphasizing that it was culturally distinctive in different parts of these territories.
