This is an excellent overview of religious history from early Shinto roots to the recent "new religions", which are often founded by female prophets. I was fascinated by the well-rounded accounts of Buddhism's evolution, including the periods of sectarian conflict over state patronage. The book shows a country subject to all the pitfalls or glories of religion as seen in other cultures -- from fanaticism and prejudice, to wisdom and beauty that transcends cultural boundaries. --author of A Galaxy of Immortal Women: The Yin Side of Chinese Civilization
