Overview

Arminian theology is sweeping through the evangelical churches of North America. While most Arminians are good, sincere, orthodox Christians, authors Robert Peterson and Michael Williams contend that aspects of Arminian thought are troubling both biblically and theologically. In particular, they argue, Arminians have too lofty a view of human nature and an inadequate understanding of God's sovereign love in Christ. Why I Am Not an Arminian explores the biblical, theological and historical background to the Calvinist-Arminian debate. The irenic nature and keen insight of this book will be appreciated by laypeople, pastors and scholars alike.

I was an Arminian at first, and was very biased against Calvinism. But that was because I was very stupid and ignorant of Scripture. By God's grace, after painstakingly examining both sides of the issue, I saw that Calvinism is really the accurate expression of what Scripture teaches, and that Arminianism is an anti-Christian heresy. I recommend this book as an introduction, but I encourage people to read more on the subject. For several superb works on Calvinism, I recommend the following. Search for them on the web (many free materials are available from these authors). Gordon Clark (Trinity Foundation) -- read all of his books: - Biblical Predestination - God and Evil Vincent Cheung (Reformation Ministries International) -- less well-known than Clark, but perhaps the best living defender of Christianity and Calvinism: - Systematic Theology - Ultimate Questions - Presuppositional Confrontations Greg Bahnsen (Covenant Media Foundation): - search for his articles, books, and, audio tapes

Good book for providing many different Arminian views, however, to me, the authors go a little too far by including the views of, more, fringe, Arminians. For example, in the chapter on Predestination, the authors mention four MAIN Arminian views but on the fourth they recite only one Wesleyan theologian with no backup of why that makes it a MAIN teaching.
