Himes takes a classical bad cop theme, blends it with racial injustice and sexism, and delivers it to the reader in a direct fashion. Booze, women, corruption, and escalation placed against the backdrop of the changing times in New York City. It is a capturing read that is easy to follow. One thing I found interesting is the 'pre-political correctness' dialogue, as well as, the author's portrayal of ethnic stereotypes.
