Description: This book explains the techniques used in medical imaging and their indications, and presents information to help understand the principles of interpretation of these studies. The book is organized by organ systems, and covers all anatomic regions.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide guidance on the use of various imaging modalities in evaluating a broad range of medical conditions, the indications for these studies, and principles of interpretation. These are worthy objectives, although for a very broad audience, and are reasonably well met.
Audience: The intended audience includes medical students, interns ("junior doctors"), and trainees in radiology, but it is most suitable for medical students and interns.
Features: The book covers the various imaging modalities by organ system, with chapters on the chest, (including cardiac and breast imaging), abdomen, skeletal system, brain, orbits and head and neck, and vascular and interventional radiology. The book does a good job of presenting and discussing plain film radiology in various aspects. The illustrations and images are excellent. The first chapter describing the various imaging modalities and how they work is quite good, but the risks of radiation are significantly overexaggerated (there is no evidence to support genetic risk from environmental and man-made radioactivity). The use of radionuclide imaging is underrepresented and undervalued in this book. The section on parathyroid imaging is actually incorrect (I-123 and Tc-99m pertechnetate image the thyroid gland, not the parathyroid glands). There is additional material online, with multiple choice questions for readers to evaluate their knowledge.
Assessment: Overall, this is a useful introduction to radiology for medical students and interns. It is helpful to have one reference for a number of modalities for various types of organ imaging and for many different medical conditions, although it does underemphasize the value of radionuclide techniques. However, the book has updated information in many areas, and the online information with multiple-choice questions should prove useful.
