About the Author

John Donne (1572-1631 ) was a cleric and lawyer, but he is best known today for his exquisite writing. His work in prose and poetry covers a wide spectrum: religion, satire, love, and death. Donne was master of the extended metaphor, as with his famous musing, "No man is an island..." In his 'metaphysical' poetry he creates metaphors that are both intellectual puzzles and passionate declarations.
