This book is designed as a reference for laboratory and diagnostic tests. It is clearly organized and includes indications for the use of the tests, reference standards, and interfering factors, to name a few. It is expected that the nurse/examiner uses standard precautions when collecting specimens. This two-part text has two specific purposes: to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of clients with specific disease processes and to provide a concise, comprehensive reference about the specific diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures selected for client management. This is a practical, easy-to-use text. Tables, appendixes, and an inclusive indexing of diagnostic and laboratory tests achieve this book's purpose. Targeted for practicing nurses and other healthcare professionals and students within these fields, this book is appropriate for primary, acute, and restorative healthcare settings. Positive features include the alphabetical listing (in part two) of the tests; it is well indexed and has multiple tables, which enhance the narrative. A strong feature is the inclusion of risks, preparation of the client, postprocedure care, client education factors affecting test results, and test-specific bibliography. There is also a listing of general reference manuals at the beginning of the text. This laboratory book is a good clinical reference for the student or practicing professional in nursing or related health fields. This clear, concise diagnostic and laboratory test reference enables healthcare professionals to incorporate the test and its implications into the plan of care for their clients. The design of this text encourages the professional to use client teaching in allhealthcare settings.

Description: This is the fourth edition of a comprehensive treatise on laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures used in clinical care.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a single comprehensive resource to guide practitioners in optimal clinical care. The authors have succeeded admirably in this worthy endeavor.
Audience: This book would be useful to all medical students, physicians in internship or early in their residency training, and practicing physicians who may want an updated and comprehensive book on currently available laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures.
Features: This pocket sized paperback consists of two major parts. The first is an alphabetical listing of clinical conditions, with relevant laboratory tests or diagnostic procedures listed accordingly. The second and much larger part consists of an alphabetic listing of all tests and diagnostic procedures. Each laboratory test is described in a standard format, beginning with the reference range for analyte values, followed by a listing of clinical conditions that increase or decrease the analyte, and a final section of professional considerations (i.e., consent issues, specimen requirements, phlebotomy procedure, etc.). Diagnostic procedures are similarly described. In many ways, the material in this book overlaps that of other pocket guides (notably, the Pocket Guide to Diagnostic Tests, 4th Edition, Nicoll et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2004)) or gold standard textbooks on laboratory testing (Laboratory Test Handbook, 5th Edition, by Jacobs et al. (Lexi-Comp, 2001)).
Assessment: This is a pretty useful book. I would recommend it to medical students and interns/residents early in their professional training.
