Overview

A Christian's understanding of God is crucial to how he or she views everything else. In The Doctrine of God: A Global Introduction, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen surveys what the church has traditionally thought about God. He also examines what the church today, both in North America and around the world, thinks about God and shows how the insights of Christians from various cultures can enrich an understanding of God.

Kärkkäinen's book will reward pastors and laypeople with a much fuller understanding of who God is and how we can enter into a deeper relationship with him.

Theology does not have a reputation for clarity or simplicity, but somehow this book succeeds in avoiding theological or philosophical obfuscation in order to show that the Bible cherishes a plurality of voices. As Christianity enters a new millennium, the classical theistic tradition is being challenged from many quarters, from postmodernism to feminism. Karkkainen (Christology: A Global Introduction) clearly wants to let this tradition and its challengers converse with one another in the spirit of diversity and tolerance. Giving equal treatment to Western and non-Western theology, he eloquently discusses process theology, ecological theology, as well as immigrant, African American, Native American, Asian, Latin American, and feminist theologies. His introduction to classic theism is particularly helpful as are his insightful comparisons between theologies as diverse as those of Vine Deloria Jr., John Hick, Karl Rahner, Paul Tillich, and Thomas Aquinas. Those seeking a survey of the current status of theology throughout the world can't ask for a better title than this descriptive textbook. Recommended for all public and academic libraries.--Gary P.
