Truly a tribute to words, poetry, and art, this most memorable "meal" is sure to have eager bookworms coming back for more! J. Patrick Lewis has served up a bountiful feast of splendid works for children. His previous children's poetry includes the "quick-on-the-draw wordplay"* and "inspired nonsense" of Ridicholas Nicholas and A Hippopotamusn't, praised as a "collection of marvelous light verse as fresh as spring"** (both Dial). —*Publishers Weekly **The Horn Book

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
With an irreverence suggestive of Ogden Nash and the silliness of Jack Prelutsky, Lewis and O'Brien whip up a whimsical confection of poems and drawings in a format just as enjoyable as the poems themselves. A "Gentleman Bookworm" invites his friends to a feast of " `ridiculous rhyme!/ But might I suggest?'/ Said the host to the guest,/ `Chew them slowly. One line at a time!' " Arrayed in chapters called "Appetizers," "Sherbets" and so on, the nonsense verses will keep young readers happily munching all the way to "Delectable Desserts." As varied in form as limericks and autograph verses, only some of Lewis's (A Hippopotamusn't) poems deal with eating (to wit, "In Oneida, New York,/ Live a Knife and a Fork/ And a pip of a Tablespoon.../ the Tablespoon gallops/ Around with the scallops,/ And cries, `Hi-ho, Silver! Away!' "). Other rhymes are sprinkled liberally with advice, as in "What to Wear Where" ("Now that we're living/ It up in Vermont,/ We wear pretty much/ Whatever we want"). As if this linguistically piquant dinner were not enough, O'Brien's (The Reptile Ball) illustrations are simply delicious. Clever and funny, his exuberantly cross-hatched pen and watercolor drawings provide humor on every page. Don't forget to sample the cheerful Hippopotamole making "mountains out of molehills," or the postcard frog snagging a stamp with his tongue. A five-star feast. Ages 4-8. (Feb.)

The poetry in this collection plays with words, rhyming Amazon with "keep your white woolly pajamazon!" The poetry plays with all that is associated with eating, including menu chapter headings and food items in poems. The poetry also celebrates the reading of books, as in bookworms hungry for the good eating of verse and rhyme. The Gentleman Bookworm makes a toast at the beginning of the feast, saying, "Chew them slowly. One line at a time." It is a fluid and delightful adventure into both the silly and profound. The illustrations fit nicely with each poem except all the poem characters' eyes appear macabre.

Meet "Paulie McCoy, a peanut buttery bit of a boy..." in J. Patrick Lewis', The Bookworm's Feast: A Potluck of Poems and snack your way through an entire four-course meal with an interlude of "sherbets" to titillate the palette. You'll visit "Knife and fork...at supper/ With beautiful Tupper-/ Ware bowls of spinach souffle"...but it is "Tablespoon that gallops with scallops, crying "Hi-ho, Silver! Away!" Imagine a sun called 'Orange Johnson' who "climbs the summer sky at noon, / Trading places with the moon..." The poems are chock full of word play, word twists and word sounds to satisfy our musical senses. O'Brien's full page paintings of a bookworm chef serving delectables to his bookworm buddies and seeing cutlery spring to life add to the fun. 1999, Dial, Ages 6 to 10, $15.89. Gr 3-6-A smorgasbord of poetic forms and moods. Arranged in sections like a formal menu ("Appetizers" to "Desserts"), the book contains poems for nearly any taste. There are selections for fans of wordplay, of limerick form, and of valentinelike verse, each accompanied by O'Brien's exuberant pen-and-watercolor drawings. Although all of the offerings may not receive five-star ratings, Lewis's poetic buffet is well worth sampling. Bon app tit!-Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT
Kirkus Reviews
Lewis (Doodle Dandies, p. 896, etc.) has created an almanac of words at play, using tongue-twisters, puns, alliteration, and many forms and fancies of rhyme scheme in an unabashed celebration of language. The book is cunningly divided into sections-"Appetizers," "Sherbets," "Entrees," "Sumptuous Side Dishes," and "Delectable Desserts"-peppered by a very few poems from other writers. Among the terrific, lightning-flash images: "Milo Armadillo/heavy metal fellow"; Paulie McCoy, "A peanut buttery bit of a boy"; and a little toe-counting rhyme that starts off "Idaho pota-toe, Italian toma-toe." In "Home, Sweet Home" readers bounce along to "I met my wife in Houdy, Miss./Or was it Odear, Me.? We bought a house in Fiven, Tenn./And lived so happily." In perfect harmony are O'Brien's marvelously textured lines, dots, stipples, and colors; his bookworms serve books-on-a-plate as a frontispiece to each section, and the characters have the bright energy of the verses.
