Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The idea has enormous promise: a drum-playing Mama ("Beating those drums makes me feel at ease with the world") remains oblivious while a virtual zoo parades through the house to share lunch with her baby. It's too bad, then, that MacCarthy and Mahy (17 Kings and 42 Elephants) fail to make the most of their tale's potential. Not that the book is without its bright spots: There is a catchy refrain that combines the sound of Mama's drums with the sound of each animal ("Boom-biddy-boom-biddy/ BAA-BAA-BAA!" reads the page in which a sheep gobbles the baby's lettuce), while large-scale drawings (most of the pages are filled with only one character) are nicely balanced by their downy texture, which plays up the softness in each animal's fur or feathers. MacCarthy also adds some evocative fillips of dynamism to her pictures of Mama-a swirling skirt and swinging (literally) jewelry. Where the book fails is in the details: the pedestrian typography-a lost opportunity to enhance the novelty of the story and its refrain; a text that, outside of the refrain, lacks a sense of rhythm or drive; and a predominately reddish-purple palette that seems dull when it should register as rich. Ages 1-5. (Feb.)
Children's Literature - Melinda Medley Sprinkle
It's lunchtime for baby, and, as mother prepares the table and places baby in the highchair, animals listen and watch from the window. While mother releases her cares by playing "Boom-Biddy-Boom-Boom" on the drums, animals enter the house undetected. Baby doesn't eat her lunch but gives the cat cheese, the dog bread and honey, the rooster an apple, and so on until her plate is completely empty. The animals exit just as they entered, and mother is so proud of baby cleaning her plate that she peels her a ripe, yellow banana. Baby, still hungry, eats it all up, Yum-Yum-Yum! A perfectly patterned book that young readers will be able to follow and participate in the trio of "Bow-Wow-Wow's," "Baa-Baa-Baa's," "Moo-Moo-Moo's," and "Yum-Yum-Yum's."

PreSThis crackerjack charmer from the team who created 17 Kings and 42 Elephants (Dial, 1987) will delight toddlers with its silliness, animal sounds, and "boom! boom! boom!" Baby throws the tasty lunch Mama has made for her onto the floor while Mama is practicing on her drums. Various animals sneak into the house and eat the food to the rhythm of the drums. A black-faced sheep chews lettuce to the beat of "Boom-biddy-boom-biddy BAA-BAA-BAA!" A cow chomps on a carrot: "Boom-biddy-boom-biddy MOO-MOO-MOO!" This one is a winner, from the blissful mother with the unusual hobby to the chubby-faced baby to the farm animals lurking by the back door. MacCarthy's whimsical illustrations are a perfect blend of pastel hues and intense colors. They actively inhabit each page and propel the story to its loving conclusion.Ann Cook, Winter Park Public Library, FL
