Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With her trademarked therapy techniques, psychotherapist Bird promises an end to repeating cycles of negative thought and emotion, unfulfilling relationships, self-hatred, and depression. She describes three instinctual personas—the fighter, the hider, and the runner—that people use to manage the "muck" (i.e., challenges, fears, loss, and sadness) in their lives; guides readers to identify their primary protective mechanisms; demonstrates how those mechanisms initiate a "boomerang effect" in which problems recur; and explains why cognitive awareness alone will not break futile patterns. Her therapy consists of deep breathing, guided meditation, and visualization to stimulate a relaxation response and transform unconscious beliefs and reactions. She writes: "Many of us don't know the underlying causes of our conflicts or the deep-rooted issues that are affecting our perceptions and reactions. Even if we have some sense of the core reasons for our behaviors, thoughts and emotions, we still find ourselves struggling with our reactivity." Bird brings a remarkable degree of clarity and an engaging style to complex psychological concepts. In this slim volume, she simplifies the process of change with a few effective exercises that can be done quickly throughout the day.

    Invaluable Wisdom!!

A very powerful little book. Dr. Bird has clearly and concisely outlined the basic challenges we all face in dealing with ourselves and life. She offers effective ways to change the habitual way we deal with the problems we face, whether they are mental, emotional or situational. Dr. Bird explains how the ways we deal with things may be familiar and comfortable but actually keep us stuck and unable to shift our perspective and behaviour so the same issues keep coming up in our lives. Her techniques for changing our habitual responses are clearly articulated so I could easily and effectively put them into practice. It's a great tool for cultivating more self-awareness and has helped me change things in my own life that were keeping me "stuck in the muck!"

Finally a book that truly gives you the tools!

This book is truly different to any other self-help book that I've read and trust me I've read a lot. It truly gave me the tools to change. The book was truly inspiring and I feel as though I have read a self-help that is actually helping me. First it gave me great insight into seeing the patterns that kept me stuck in self-defeating behaviors. While many other self-help books helped me to see the things that were self-defeating, the difference is that this book has given me the tools to actually take the steps towards healing.

When I would catch myself in the behaviors that the book outlined would entrap me, I was able to have a new perspective to see that I had choices and I was able to apply new behaviors in my life. The book gave me a new understanding of the things that were hurting me. It gave me the ability to see and apply moment to moment self-care techniques and ultimately self-love and healing.

It helps me handle my relationships and difficult situations in work or difficulties in life more effectively because I have the insight from the teachings in this book. I really understand that our childhood - our core wound - will always dictate our behavior until we can see it for what it is. The book helps me not just to see the behavior but the ways to change it, which is truly the great gift of this book and what makes it so unique and stand apart from the pack.

    This Woman is a Genius

Even while I was reading the first few pages of this book, I already learned techniques that help me immensely with my day to day stresses! I've read a lot of self help and psych books, but this one is the first one I've seen that actually gives you the tools to make changes and improvements. I bought several more of these to give to my friends, I think we can all really benefit from the unique wisdom in this book - highly recommended by me! A+++++

    A Life Changing Book

My interest was piqued by the title of this book. I learned about how we react to situations and people in our lives. Some of these reactions resulted in emotional, mental and psychological blocks that control how we interact with others and ourselves. Dr. Bird engages us with her story telling that I could not put this book down until I reached the last page. It was easy to see myself at different times of my life in all the characters she described in explaining how we keep repeating the same situations over and over again, the boomerang effect. I would have loved to have this book in my hands about 20 years ago as it would have lightened the years I spent on my own growth and development. A key component is, as she puts it succinctly, "Self awareness is one of the first things we need in order to overcome the boomerang effect."

I like that she placed 'recaps' throughout this fairly thin but substantial book, packed with valuable insights and tools for effectively changing one's life. It is also an easy workbook for one who truly wishes to make these life changes. The daily easy to do exercises are just that, simple yet profoundly transformative.

    Boomeranged!

After reading Dr.Birds book,The Boomerang Effect, which is so unique and enlightening. I am thrilled and amazed that finally someone has answered the question," now that I know what my problems are ,how do I change them? " The genius of this book is that Dr Bird takes us on a journey through exercises that are easily and clearly explained to actually see our behavior in different situations and develop the tools to make the necessary shifts. This book does bring you around full circle and guides and teaches us how to empower ourselves and make the changes we deserve to have a full and rewarding life.Through her S.I.T.therapy technique you actually see yourself and consciously learn to communicate and clear out old behaviors that are toxic for our well being.I praise Dr.Bird ,for her work and her committment to developing such a remarkable and intelligent book.Thank you.

    UNIQUE AND ILLUMINATING

The Boomerang Effect is an extremely helpful book. It provides a unique and illuminating view of the negative behavioural patterns that trap us in harmful cycles. The style of writing, although simple and easy to understand, is profound. The author does a great job in explaining the mechanisms that are working behind the scenes inside of us that keep us stuck. The book is easy to read and accessible, a practical guide based on a scientific exploration of negative behaviour. I really feel transformed from reading it. I recommend it highly.

    Eye-opening and Life Changing

Loved this book!! I can see myself so clearly. An easy and enjoyable read but full of insight and information that really helped me to see myself so much better. I've been able to see the changes in my life immediatley because I'm more self-aware. I see how I trip myself up and how I can avoid these traps. It's not a once read. It's a book to return to. I went back to different sections as needed and it makes more sense with time. Not a book you give away after reading. One you keep for yourself. Loved every wonderful second of the book... Highly recommended!!

Highly Recommended - You must check it out!!!

This is an exceptional book for anyone wanting to make positive changes in their emotional blocks that hinder them from reaching their potential in life.
As a psychotherapist Dr. Bird has "pioneered" a remarkable method, and her tools are aptly described in this amazing book.
I recommend it without hesitation. It is not a substitute for personal, individual therapy with Dr. Bird, but if this is not possible for whatever reason, then her book is the very next best way of accessing the incredible techniques she employs. She is a unique star in the galaxy of her profession.

    This is an Excellent Book

This is an excellent book that enlightens you to the ways you can change with techniques that are easy to do and effective. I not only gained a lot of personal insight but also the tools to change. The basic theme is self-care. The author's narrative is engaging and easy to follow. All the way throughout I had these eureka moments where I was able to clearly see the many different parts of my personality. Reading it is like a journey of self where you learn to identify who you are, and then you learn how you can change so that you get off of the boomerang effect.

I particularly like the book's usability. I use the exercises and I have seen a change as to how I handle my anxiety and negativity. I am more aware of what I am doing and changed some of my ways of responding. Part of the benefit for me was being able to share it with my family. My 17-year old son read it too and we've been able to work with one another better. That's been a real plus.

This book is not just theory, but a how-to guide to improving your life. You will throw it in your purse and reference it whenever you need. It is not a book you read once and put down. It is a book you'd use constantly. If you are invested in trying to get yourself out of boomerang effect - the repetitiveness of doing the same - this book will help you get it right. I've read feel good books. They gave me great quotes and insights, but this book is a working copy. You can't read and put it back. You have to go over it again and again - just to get the tips and re-read a certain section. It gives you that much good information to use.
