Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Kathleen Beck
Short story fans will welcome this entry in the popular DAW series of science fiction/fantasy anthologies, with many familiar authors of the genre providing original tales. Readers who are jaded by the usual urban settings will find that eerie happenings, magical creatures, and paranormal events are just as much at home out in the sticks, deep forests, hidden lakes, and tiny towns. In Timothy Zahn's "Protection," a shape-shifting shepherd foils a gang of criminals with the aid of a beautiful mermaid. "Lake People," by Chris Pierson, is genuinely creepy in the tradition of the best campfire stories. Beelzebub runs a detective agency in a small Texas community in Raymond Benson's "The Devil Is a Gentleman." A fisherman catches a mermaid and discovers she is a real fishwife in "Trophy Wife," by Vicki Johnson-Steger. "Black Rider," by Brian A. Hopkins, is a moving depiction of overwhelming grief. Not all the stories are completely successful, however. There are a few head-scratchers and some that are just too short to develop the plot fully. A number of the authors show an annoying tendency to depict all country dwellers as having bad grammar and hick accents. Typos mar the text. Short stories can be a hard sell to teens, but libraries where anthologies are popular will find this a reasonably priced, reasonably high-quality purchase. This is also a fruitful source for some good read-alouds—try "The Taste of Strawberry Jam," by Elizabeth A. Vaughan, for a delicious cautionary tale. Reviewer: Kathleen Beck
