Overview

On the ice and around the house where he lives with his eleven adopted siblings and distracted parents, Boot, the Wings' premier left wing, is most comfortable cruising the margins and sneaking in his best shots when they're least expected. But midway through his first Squirt season Boot discovers that a new weapon is allowed, one that appeals to everyone but him: bodychecking. Suddenly, surrounded by the threat of being hit by anyone at any angle at any speed, Boot finds his game is in big trouble. He can't check—or won't. The team is upset and everyone but Boot is getting creamed. Will he hold back so long that he loses not only his teammates' respect—but his place on the ice as a Wing?

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-7This engaging book is the fourth in a series, but can stand on its own. The Boot, an 11-year-old right wing, has been playing ice hockey for a while, but the team hasn't been allowed to body check or "hit" until now. The Boot, a foster child, is hesitant about "hitting" because he has been successful at getting goals without getting physical. Brooks provides realistic dialogue and hockey jargon to keep readers involved. They will be curious about why the Boot is so philosophically opposed to hitting his opponents since he has chosen this sport. Team dynamics play into the plot as his friends turn against him for acting "cowardly" and not supporting them. This is not just a run-of-the-mill sports story and it is very different from Matt Christopher's novels, except for the vivid play-by-play action. Serious philosophical differences separate the Boot from his peers and there is much for readers to think about here. Hockey fans will definitely want to check out the titles about the other team members.Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA
