Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Maron's ( Past Imperfect ) series launch introduces attorney Deborah Knott, the daughter of an infamous North Carolina bootlegger, in an atmospheric adventure mixing Southern politics and a mysterious killing`unsolved murder' in next sentence . While Deb campaigns for a district court judgeship, 18-year-old Gayle Whitehead asks her to investigate the unsolved murder of her mother, Janie, which took place when Gayle was an infant. The girl wants Deb, who knows the locals of Cotton Grove, to ask around and see if she can find clues the police might have missed. Deb visits Michael Vickery, the gay son of Cotton Grove's retired doctor and owner of the property where Janie's body was found. She discovers long-kept secrets, learning that Janie had a roving eye and that a lesbian friend and her lover had made overtures to Janie a week before the murder.sentence ok?see my revisions yes, fine But not until another death occurs does Deb begin to close in on the truth. Filled with good-ole-boy patter and detailed local color, the story flows smoothly, and if it lacks suspense, Maron's appealing characterizations and her knowing eye for family relationships more than compensate. Excellent debut book in an excellent series! I've read all the books in the Deborah Knott series (and her Sigrid Harald series). Maron is an excellent observer of the changes occurring in the New South. Her characters are rich and multi-dimensional and her sense of place is spot-on! Very highly recommended, as is her entire series!

    Compelling Characters

Well thought out characters wit an interesting plot line. The protagonist, a lawyer, Deborah Knott, has a unique background and plentiful relatives and strong friendships. She has a good head on her shoulders and strong professional ethics. The murderer was a real surprise until the end. Deborah's southern roots come in loud and clear and the Christian references, while clear, were muted and not preachy. The protagonist and other peripheral characters were so interesting that I'm going to continue reading more books in the series.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great 1st

This book is great because the story is different than the standard first mystery in a series and it makes you want to read the next book. Even though these books have been out for a while, I just discovered Margaret Maron and am enjoying reading through the Deborah Knott series.

    Highly Recommended

The first book in the Deborah Knott Series - learn about Deborah Knott and the "life road" she has travelled and how that road has affected her. The author has done an excellent job of letting you "feel what Deborah feels". An excellent read!

    SUPER!!

this was my first book by this author -- totally impressed -- fast and funny and suspensfull -- excellent writing. Will be on the lookout for more of her work. Recommend to ALL that like decent fine mysteries without a lot of trashy language and sex.
