    Demystified Indeed

After reading the diagnostic criteria and now understanding the biological and environmental conditioners for this disease and experiencing all 9 of the symptoms described by Friedel with my now separated wife, I find that I can now understand completely where her meanness and irrational behavior comes from. How does one go about telling her about this because she is one that flat out does not want to know - she defends herself - to the destruction of her relationships? Is someone who's lived with this for 53 years able to open themselves up to the therapys described? Or are they left to their own devices forever? I'm heartbroken over this and needed this book to understand what happened to my wife.

Best sourcebook on BPD -- period!

This is by far the best comprehensive book on BPD regarding treatment, diagnosis, etiology and symptoms. It's up to date, easy to read and understand and has resources, an appendix and other items. I've done a lot of reading on the subject (I'm a mental health care professional) and this one is the best.

    Finally, a compassionate explanation

Dr. Friedel writes this informative and compassionate book from both personal and professional perspectives. It is a well-written and comprehensive guide for those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as for their loved ones. The chapter about the brain is a bit on the technical side for a layperson, but overall, the book clearly explains the biological basis of this diagnosis, as well as suggestions for dealing with the problem behaviors associated with it. Most of my BPD patients who've read it say that it's a relief to finally have a scientific explanation for what is going on with their troublesome thoughts, feelings and impulses. As a clinician, I recommend it to anyone wanting to embrace a reasonable and empathic view of this often misunderstood diagnosis.
