From The CriticsReviewer: Brett C. Plyler, M.D.(Northwestern Memorial Hospital)
Description: This is a patient resource for people suffering from borderline personality disorder.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate and assist patients with borderline personality disorder.
Audience: The book is written primarily for patients with borderline personality disorder and secondarily for their friends and families. Therapists may also find this useful.
Features: The first of the book's three sections covers the factual information known about borderline personality disorder. The second discusses how to set up an effective treatment plan for the patient, and includes such topics as selecting a therapist, setting up a support network, and preparing for crises. The last section focuses on everyday living skills that can help the patient cope. Useful summaries and bullet points begin each chapter as well as comments from one author who has recovered from borderline personality disorder.
Assessment: This book will be useful to patients suffering from borderline personality disorder. It provides a great deal of information about the illness and effective treatment strategies. The third section in particular is very good as it details a mindset/understanding that the patient can use in the difficulties that arise daily. Further, having an author who has recovered from the disorder lends an authenticity and practicality not found in other books.
