Overview

On Born for This! veteran R&B vocalist Stephanie Mills proves that age ain't nuthin' but a number. With nearly 30 years of theater and recording experience under her petite belt, the 47-year-old vocal dynamo can still outbelt junior divas like Beyoncé and Alicia Keys. And this ten-song disc offers timeless R&B that both her faithful and newfound fans will savor. "Never Knew Love" borrows its title and lyrical phrasings from Mills's 1980 hit "Never Knew Love like This Before," and the single "Healing Time" could easily fit on an Erykah Badu or Jill Scott album. Mills, however, breathes life into the latter song's lyrics -- such as "They'll be no last kiss / Forget one last cry / Cause we can't be friends /And Lord knows we tried" -- with an aching soprano that imparts the pain of a woman in dire need of healing time after a breakup. Cleverly, Mills offers "Something in the Way," a sparse, club-friendly remake of her late-'80s favorite "Something in the Way You Make Me Feel," and the BeBe Winans–penned title track is as good as any of her classic power ballads. Indeed, Mills was Born for This! and her latest album is a testament to her underrated talent.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
Nearly a decade since her last album -- though she remained active and became the first (and most likely the last) artist to record with house veterans Masters at Work, gospel stalwart BeBe Winans, and gruff rap MC DMX -- Stephanie Mills resurfaces on her own independent label with a solid album of contemporary R&B, most of which differs thematically (i.e., heartbreak, devotion, romance) from 1995's gospel-oriented Personal Inspirations. Surrounded by associates of Whitney Houston, Faith Evans, and Will Downing, Mills has made an album of mostly subdued and lightly upbeat material that will please her grown-up fan base. Mills is in such fine, with-the-times form that you could be fooled into thinking that she never went away.
