Overview

Lady Gaga's drama club ambition to marry rock & roll rebellion with her disco beats turns Born This Way into Like a Prayer by way of Bat Out of Hell. She knowingly recontextualizes Madonna for a postmodern collage, the sly similarities offering tangible reminders that Gaga is the heir to the diva throne. Her true gift is her considerable dexterity at delivering the basics. "Marry the Night" glistens with a neon pulse, "Born This Way" has a giddiness to its self-importance, "Judas" turns "Alejandro" into towering gothic disco, she achieves her metal-disco fusion on "Bad Kids," and she even shows vulnerability on "Yoü and I."

Editorial Reviews

New York Times - Jon Pareles
The album is as catchy and euphorically overblown as the music that made her a sensation.... "Born This Way" is an album of bangers; every song, give or take an introduction, picks up and roars.... She draws on club beats like trance and techno but never settles for the repetitiveness of much dance music; it’s a funhouse of an album, with sonic jolts and gimmicks that she spent months on. The album has abundant echoes of the 1980s: not just Madonna, Lady Gaga’s obvious predecessor in many things, but also the heft and piano pounding of ’80s heartland rock.

With so much fanfare, how could I not order the new Lady Gaga CD? She certainly won't be that much richer over it. It is very much what I had expected, which was an awful lot. Lady Gaga delivers! This album is heavier than her previous work, which I like. Tracks 14 and 15 are pretty much throw aways...she put them at the end for a reason.

Lady gaga's 3rd album is a good one. I actually like this album! She has really good songs on here! They are fun to dance to. I like the songs marry the night, born this way, government hooker, bloody mary, bad kids, highway unicorn road to love, heavy metal lover, electric chapel, you and I and the edge of glory. over all I like all of her songs on her new album.
