Susanna Burney has an appropriate vocal personality for such a light romance/mystery. She sounds likable, good humored, and smart. Largely stinting the laugh lines, she treats the novel’s other elements with a bit too much understatement. Her infrequent bursts of sparkle add brief gusts of freshness.
