Prologue

Chicago, Illinois

Thursday, 5:38 p.m.

Someone was trying to kill her.

As Eve Edens squeezed the brakes on her classic 1966 Vespa motor scooter and felt absolutely zero response, it occurred to her that all the misfortune she'd suffered lately could no longer be chalked up to coincidence. The mugging, the fire, and now this? Even she wasn't this unlucky.

So, it was official; someone wanted her dead...

Of course, she'd have to worry about who that could be later. Right now, she had to find a way to stop the scooter from plowing into the stalled traffic fifty feet in front of her.

Her breath punched from her lungs, and her brain buzzed with terror as she thumbed the button for the horn. But the pathetic meep, meep, meep didn't do a thing to catch the attention of the motorists parked on the roadway ahead. And even if it did, it's not as if they could get out of the way or anything. Traffic was at a standstill in all lanes. There was no place to go except...

Oh, geez. She was going to have to try for the lake.

Yanking the handlebars hard to the right, she gritted her teeth as she bounced over the curb on Lake Shore Drive with head-whipping force. In a flash, she was on the grassy area separating the road from the jogging path and the greenbelt that ran the length of the city. Then, she was zooming across the trail at forty miles per hour, nearly plowing into a man wearing bright red running shorts. Missing him by no more than a hairsbreadth, she careened down the steep embankment on the opposite side. Dodging trees and gathering speed-which she so didn't need-she braced herself for the inevitable.

Sweet Lord, help me!

And then the inevitable happened. She was airborne.

The smell of car exhaust and hot asphalt was replaced by the aroma of freshwater algae and fish as she flew past the high, man-made marina wall and over the cobalt blue of Lake Michigan. The Vespa whined beneath her, its engine revving uselessly, and she only had a split second to think, a split second to gather her scattered wits. Letting go of the handlebars, she kicked the scooter away right before she slammed into the water. Sploosh!

Oh, God! It was like hitting a brick wall. A cold brick wall. Because even in late summer, the lake's temperature remained in the forties. For a moment, the hard jolt and shock of the frigid water paralyzed her, and she drifted down into the dark abyss. Then, her stalled synapses started firing like crazy, giving her the cranial version of a kick-in-the-pants, and she swam toward the surface with everything she had. But no matter how hard she scissored her legs or pulled with her arms, the sunlight glittering on the rippling waves above grew fainter and fainter, and the cold pressing in on her from all sides grew ragged, icy teeth that bit into the exposed skin of her arms and face.

She was drowning.

The woman who'd grown up on the water, knowing how to set a sail before she could read, was drowning. The woman who'd spent her entire adult life studying marine animals from both above and below the water's surface was drowning. The woman who was mere weeks away from delivering her doctoral thesis on the effects of tourist snorkeling and diving on the world's great reefs was drow-

Doctoral thesis?

Her books!

Her backpack was filled with her research material. All however-many-umpteen pounds of it. And it was dragging her down to a watery grave.

Reaching for the clip around her waist, she managed to squeeze the locking mechanism with fingers gone numb from the frosty water. Then she shrugged out of the shoulder straps and immediately kicked toward the surface. Her lungs were burning for oxygen, her blood pounding in her head with every thundering heartbeat, and the urge to take a breath was as instinctual as it was overwhelming. But to do so would mean death. So she bit into her bottom lip and beat back that desire even as she clawed her way through the water.

So close, so close. Stars danced before her eyes; darkness closed in on the edge of her vision. No! No! I'm not gonna make it! And then...

"Uhhhhhh!" she raked in life-giving air the instant she broke the surface, coughing and sputtering as she sucked droplets of water into her lungs along with all that beautiful, delicious oxygen.

She could hear people yelling to her from the top of the marina wall, asking if she was okay, but she was too busy restoring her body's air supply to answer. Once she hacked up the liquid from her heaving lungs, she flipped onto her back, concentrating everything she had on simply floating and slowing her frantic heartbeat. As the water closed over her ears, drowning out the sound of the concerned crowd, she let her gaze linger on the white, puffy clouds lazily drifting across the powder-blue sky.

For a few seconds, she found comfort in the quietness of the lake's embrace, in the weightlessness that permitted her thoughts to drift with the tide. But the seconds were fleeting. Because the taste of blood from her bitten lip quickly brought her slamming back to reality. Like it or not-and she most certainly did not-she could no longer overlook the fact that someone was out to get her...

And if the police ignored this latest incident like they'd ignored the first two, if they blew it off as bad luck, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or flippin' faulty wiring or something, she was going to be left with no recourse but to turn to the one man she'd sworn to avoid like a skin-diving expedition with tiger sharks. She was going to have to ask "Wild Bill" Reichert and his band of merry-covert-operative-men over at Black Knights Inc. for help.

Crap.

I've been waiting for Eve and Bill's story since book 1, and it DID NOT disappoint. Born Wild, like the previous books in this series, sucked me in right away and I ate it all up in one sitting. Eve has definitely grown in each book leading up to her own, I was glad to see her stand up for herself against everyone. A backbone is important when dealing with strong alpha men. The mystery of who was coming after Eve was an interesting background while we learned about Eve and Bill's past together and what drove them apart. Knowing the story from both sides before both characters was great and it led me to figure out the culprit before the reveal. I was happy to see everything out in the air, and to watch as Bill and Eve gave in to the feelings they had never let go of. It was a great story about love and protection. Bill and Eve are such strong characters and I'm glad that they worked their way through the mess and ended up together. I can't wait for more Black Knights!

So far and I'm not far but Eve has all the makings of every stupid, insipid heroine in the romance genre. I'll read it all because I paid the most for it and I did so because all of the previous books in this series are pretty great. I hope the next 200ish pages are worth my time. I'll finish my review after. (2 stars only because I like Ace or it would be less)

I was looking for a quick read about guys with motorcycles, and this is mostly that. While it did stretch the bounds of realism it was no worse than you find in any other romance novel. Fun quick read but I never felt very invested in the story.

I have to admit I wasn't very excited about this book beforehand because I just never clicked with Eve.  I liked Born Wild, but I just didn't love it like the previous books in the series.  I did end up liking Eve but that wasn't until near the end of the story.  I just didn't buy Bill and Eve together.  I did like the suspense of the story though the bad guy was pretty easy for me to figure out early on.  My absolute favorite part of the book and what probably kept me from setting it aside , was the back story set-up for Delilah and Mac.  They are exciting and I can't wait for their story which is next in the series.  I missed some of the previous heroes and was especially disappointed that Rock and Vanessa didn't make an appearance.  Ms. Walker has A LOT of characters in the BKI series and I want a story for ALL OF THEM, but I don't want the original heroes who kicked off the series to be forgotten either.  Bottom like, "Born Wild" was good but not great.

Julie Ann Walker's Black Knights books are always amazing. Eve and Bill's story was just as exciting as all the others have been. My anticipation builds for each book and I am never disappointed when it finally arrives. Once again, the story is full of everything I could want in a book. There's mystery, suspense, humor, hotness, and just enough of the gooey cheesy stuff...lol. Eric Church's "Springsteen" will once again be playing on repeat on my ipod for a very long time. Also, as with all the other books, the setup for the next one was fabulous! The anticipation is already killing me! How much longer do I have to wait?

This novel is chalk full of suspense caused by the danger, mystery, and palpable chemistry that Walker puts down to paper. Her descriptions and narrative bring this novel to be in a larger than life way. I can definitely say that I didn’t see that ending coming, however. Walker kept me guessing right to the very end. I love how raw & gritty the Black Knights are as individuals. Their rough and tumble demeanours really shine through Walker’s writing. At the same time, each has a little something that makes them stand out in a big way. I thoroughly enjoy how well we are getting to know them by this point in time in the series. Everyone is really becoming real to me. Bill & Eve are priceless together. They’re so set on not actually talking that they fight their way through non-existent battles. At the same time, the tension between them, both animosity and sheer chemical attraction, is off the charts. It makes for a very unique main couple. Once again, Walker has brought her secret agents/motorcycle mechanics to life in a big way. This was an exciting, fast paced ride through one heck of a story.

~ 3.5 Born Wild Stars ~  Born Wild is book five in the Black Knights Inc. series by Julie Ann Walker. We get some hot alpha men, strong witty females, passionate sex, action, and tons of humor. These books in this series fascinate, impress, and transfix me with the situations, story-lines and predicaments these guys and gals find themselves in. And wow baby the covers are just so very nice and hot After reading this one I was a little undecided on how I felt about it. I’ve been waiting to get the whole story of Eve Edens and William “Wild Bill” Reichert ever since Eve came back into the picture in In Rides Trouble. The tension between these two was so strong from the moment they meet again. What made this one so undecided for me was Eve. I was just not sure about her and well I felt William needed/deserved better We get a few surprises in regards to their history and relationship which is full of heartache, betrayal and disappointment. I was not sure if these two could get past everything that was done to them and between them. At the same time we have them working together to try and find out who is responsible for trying to kill Eve. Both plots are strong and weaved together we have an interesting book We don’t get the whole gang like in previous installments, but we still get some great side characters from previous books incorporated into the story. I enjoy it when an author brings back her/his previous characters. They bring all the spark and quirkiness right along with them each and every time they show back up I love the Black Knights Inc. series. The characters and situations are always entreating. Born Wild was another great read in this series.

Evelyn "Eve" Edens is socialite that stole William "Wild Bill" Reichert heart twelve years ago and wants him back in her life now more than ever. Eve believes that someone is trying to kill but she doesn't know why. All she knows is that the police aren't doing anything about it and her only option is The Black Knights Inc. for help. Bill, a Navy SEAL and explosive technician, is wondering what went wrong with Eve but he can't seem to separate the past from the present. Bill discovers that Eve's the telling the truth raises all his protective instincts despite his feelings. Who wants Eve dead? Will Bill admit his feelings? Will Eve tell Bill the truth? Your answers await you in Born Wild. The fireworks between Eve and Bill have been off the charts since both of their introductions. Neither of them willing to give each other an inch. Bill's bad boy status makes him more than a match for Eve's shy and quiet personality. The story is compelling and interesting. The characters are real, honest, interesting, and down to earth. I love that each story builds on the previous one! Ms. Walker is on my must read and buy list.

Reviewed by Jen Book provided by the publisher for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book I freakin’ love this series. And this installment is no exception. This is the story of Eve and Bill. They were childhood sweethearts that due to multiple factors ended up breaking up. Twelve years later, they’re thrown together when Eve’s life is threatened and she turns to Bill for help. So I’m a sucker for a reunion story, and at heart, that’s what this tale is. Add is an ultra-alpha male and a girl who is trying to break out of her shy, meek shell and well, I’m sold. Sign me up. I want to read this book! I enjoyed meeting both Bill and Eve and watching the chemistry between them as they let go of the past and embrace the future. They both had issues to deal with — Bill with his trust of Eve after she broke his heart, Eva with family conflict as well as some personal growth — but as this is a romance, we know they overcome it to find that happily ever after. But it is the journey that just tugged at my heart. And what a ride that was. Now I’ll admit, the mystery was a little on the weak side. I had it narrowed down to two possible bad guys very early on and knew who it was about halfway through. But my enjoyment of the story wasn’t diminished and the reasoning behind the bad guys actions was solid, if not terribly surprising. However, as with all of Ms Walker’s books, the action scenes (both in and out of the bedroom) are so descriptive, I am able to visualize everything. I highly recommend this series to romantic suspense fans. While this book can be read on its own, I feel that it would be enhanced if read after reading the earlier books in the series (in particular, In Rides Trouble, which is Bill’s sister’s story, but also sets this one up). I can’t wait for the next installment!

I liked it! BORN WILD: BLACK KNIGHTS INC. (#5 in the series) by Julie Ann Walker runs 279 pages without front- and end-matter. It proved to be a very different read from books #1-4...and not necessarily in an all good or all bad way. It has a very different sense of setting, set of problems/conflicts, and far less focus on the corporation (motorcycle shop front)--I liked the variety! That said, I still found the read to be enjoyable, fun, with significant suspense. Lots of page-turning angst. Eve is a well-educated, wealthy woman whose language is far cleaner than Billy's (he's a former Navy SEAL, which explains his language)... as a reader, I found her "clean" language with "fake" swears to be a stretch... And this is use of creative toned-down expletives seems to be where some of the negative reviews stem from. The conflict and angst was spot on....people she loved and didn't know if she could trust--her father and her ex-husband. Billy--Wild Bill--Reichert has been a favorite secondary character in previous books in this series and I was truly anxious to read his story. While this book didn't move me the way the previous ones in the series did, it was still an enjoyable read and I liked it. I enjoyed it well enough to want to read upcoming books. I LOVE second-chance themes...and Billy and Eve's romance gone wrong was a perfect opportunity to set the story straight, to address the past, to move forward, and reunite two people who've loved each other far too long. The villain(s) comeuppance was deliciously satisfying, and it was a treat to see favorite characters from past books make a cameo appearance in BORN WILD. Sensuality Level: Rated R (quite graphic and fiercely romantic and in character) Language: Rated R (but not crass)
