Read an Excerpt

People from all over the world seem to feel a connection to Boston. Whether or not you've visited the city, you probably already know something about it.

Maybe your best friend went to college here, or your next-door neighbor worships the Red Sox, or your baby-sitter's favorite movie is Good Will Hunting, or your internist did her residency at Massachusetts General. You see Cheers reruns and the Boston Pops' Fourth of July concert on TV, Fidelity manages your retirement savings, and you remember something about a tea party. You find yourself thinking that Boston sounds like a fun place to visit. You're right.

The city's historic and cultural attractions, entertaining diversions, and manageable size make it a wildly popular business, convention, and tourist destination. In order to plan the most enjoyable trip, I let you know a little about what to expect.

The Hub of the Solar System

Oliver Wendell Holmes gave Boston perhaps its most popular nickname: The Hub of the Solar System (which survives partly because headline writers love short words like "Hub"!). The solar system may be a bit of an exaggeration, but eastern Massachusetts has become an important destination for education, high-tech companies, financial services, and health care organizations. Don't be too quick to envision legions of pasty-faced techies glowing under fluorescent lights, though. Boston is downright beautiful. Redbrick buildings and cobblestone streets contrast delightfully with modern glass towers (and concrete boxes that seemed like a good idea at the time). Countless millions of dollars went into cleaning up Boston Harbor and the result is worth every penny. The "Boston Miracle" the local manifestation of the plunging national crime rate means that the city feels safer than it has in many years.
