Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
"Taxation without representation is tyranny" was the cry of colonists defending their right to control Britain's imposed taxes. On March 5, 1770, snowballs thrown at a guard provoked a confrontation and soon five colonists were dead in an incident called the Boston Massacre. This title from the eye-catching "We the People" biography series presents one of the conflicts between the American colonists and the British that eventually lead to the Revolutionary War. The first chapter gives a brief summation of the day's events followed by six brief easy-to-read chapters that accurately portray the circumstances leading up to the massacre. One gets a feeling of going back in time reading about smugglers, Tories, Sons of Liberty, impressments, lobsterbacks, and boycotts. Prominent historians who were influential during the period are introduced. The book's pages are accented with elegant gold frames stamped with book title and date. They surround the text set on a white background. Captions provide additional details for the black-and-white or full-color period paintings, documents, and maps. The actual battle scene on the cover invites readers into the conflict. Other features include a table of contents, glossary, "Did You Know," dates/timeline, and important people profiles. Added valuable resources include a list of quality and current book titles, reliable web sites through FactHound, and an index. This fact-filled book provides a broad picture of the times and is an excellent choice for enriching history lessons, researching, or writing assignments. 2005, Compass Point Books, Ages 9 to 12.
