Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
On December 16, 1773 several hundred people stormed onto the Dartmouth, a commercial ship anchored in Boston Harbor. The men who barged onto the Dartmouth were, in many instances, wearing rudimentary disguises that mimicked the dress of Native Americans. Once on board the vessel, the trespassers tossed bundles of tea leaves into the harbor thereby destroying them. This act, taken in defiance to British legislation that monopolized the tea trade, was but one step in many that ultimately led to the American Revolution. Known as the Boston Tea Party, this rebellious act was met with scorn and anger by British authorities. However, despite the harsh measures taken by the British a die had been cast in Boston that would result in the eventual overthrow of King George's rule in the Thirteen Colonies. In The Boston Tea Party writer Ann Malaspina does a fine job of recounting both the events that manifested themselves on that far off December day and the antecedents to and consequences of those actions. Written in a clear manner, this book also includes a variety of reflective tools. Periodically readers are provided websites that connect to the content at hand where further research can occur. Culminating reflective questions linked to expository writing activities are also featured. In addition, primary source documents are touched on with links to the complete writings included. This approach makes this book one that can be read at a surface level to good effect or used as a jumping off point for deeper study and understanding. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
