ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Thomas J. Elpel had the rare opportunity as a child to spend hundreds of hours with his grandmother, exploring the hills and meadows of Montana. Tom's grandmother helped him to learn about the native plants and their uses, igniting a passion for nature that has inspired Tom ever since.

Tom is now the director of Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School (HOPS) in Pony, Montana where he teaches classes on stone age skills, including botany. Botany in a Day grew from Tom's desire to provide an easy means for other people to discover a closer connection with the natural world. Tom is also the author of three other books inspired by nature, including: Participating in Nature, Direct Pointing to Real Wealth and Living Homes.

more useful than any other plant guide on my shelf

This book has changed the way I look at plants. I've spent the past few years interested in edible and medicinal plants. Previously, when identifying a plant, I used to have to flip through color plates of unrelated plants, searching randomly for one that matched the unknown plant. Then, if I found it, I would have to memorize what its uses (such as astringent, good for stomach problems, high in starch, etc.), completely separately from other plants I already knew. But now, by just memorizing key characteristics of certain families, I can make an educated guess about a plant's uses before I even know what species it is. Although it is a technical book, it is also pretty easy reading because the author talks about his personal experiences with the plants to make it interesting. He also talks about which plants he found most useful as food sources and how long it took him to gather a quart or a cup of certain food plants. All in all, Botany in a Day is an essential reference for anyone interested in plants.
