KLIATT - George Galuschak
Chiyako Goto believes the old story about people having a red thread attached to their pinky tying them to the person they love. She can see the threads, and makes money telling fortunes at her high school. After a series of mishaps Chiyako encounters a Shirogane, a powerful magical artifact that makes a pact with her: she can see and tie threads of fate. But the Shirogane exacts a price: Chiyako is now a child, her greatest desire—to be an independent adult—severed. She lives with three other onmyoji, specialists in magic and divination, all of them older men, tying people's strings of fate. My favorite story in this volume features Chiyako encountering a depressed ghost (is there any other kind?), whom she agrees to accompany home. The ghost turns out to be (surprise!) an evil spirit. Bound Beauty is a manga that contains elements of comedy, horror and romance. Chiyako is a spunky heroine who is a real go-getter; when she summons Shirogane she turns back into a 17-year-old. The magical system described in this book is based on the relationships between the elements and can get confusing. The art features lots of character details and is short on settings; the action scenes are coherent. The dialogue is lively and features sobriquets like "muscle head" and "horn dog." Bound Beauty contains comic book violence and one profanity (bitch') and is recommended for junior high and high school graphic novel collections where manga is popular. Reviewer: George Galuschak
