Overview

Welcome to Darmid, where magic is a sin, fairy tales are contraband, and the people live in fear of the Sorcerers on the other side of the mountains.

Rowan Greenwood has everything she's supposed to want from life—a good family, a bright future, and a proposal from a handsome and wealthy magic hunter. She knows she should be content with what she has. If only she could banish the idea that there's more to life than marriage and children, or let go of the fascination with magic she's been forced to suppress since childhood.

When Rowan unknowingly saves the life of one of her people’s most feared enemies, that simple act of compassion rips her from her sheltered life and throws her into a world of magic that’s more beautiful, more seductive, and more dangerous than she ever could have imagined.

Rowan might get everything she ever dreamed of—that is, if the one thing she's always wanted doesn't kill her first.

I read a lot and hardly ever write a review, but this book was so great I had to recommend it! Wonderful book, perfect mix of fantasy and romance. Plot was intriguing and I loved the characters, especially Aren and his transformation from bad boy to good guy. The romance between the characters was perfect and not too steamy. Can't wait for the next one!

A fun story with an intriguing world. As soon as I finished the book, I wanted to get another one by the author -- and I was lucky because there was another one out!

A great fantasy story that doesn't shy away from harsh truths. I loved the characters and their developments throughout the book. A lot of times the characters can seem superficial, but I felt like I truly understood Aren and Rowan and knew their thought processes. I appreciated the fact that Aren was more complex and we get a sense of who is he, because a lot of time the attention is on the girl lead, but I felt like I could connect with him more.   Both characters grew separately and together, which makes their connection that much better.  Highly recommend! Although don't buy this the night before an exam because you'll end up staying up way too late the finish the book instead of studying

This is a young adult fantasy novel that is geared for the upper end of that age category.  With a handful of violent scenes and budding relationship between two of our main characters, it may be a tad bit much for the younger crowd.  That being said, it was incredibly well written with very few points that I wasn't fond of - and nothing that I flat out didn't like. A few times the author wasn't as clear as she could have been about who was speaking or performing some action and I had to go back a few sentences to try and figure it out.  This seemed to happen mostly when she was writing from Aren's point of view - so perhaps I just didn't pick up on his voice well enough. I loved the character of Rowan.  Her fierce curiosity that often got her lectured on what topics were appropriate for her to read and learn about, her seemingly fearless nature, and her quick thinking were all traits that anyone would find themselves drawn to.  But at the same time, she wasn't perfect.  She trusted too easily and found it difficult to make the hard decisions on her own (such as if she should get married).  The way she matured and grew throughout the journey was amazing.  I didn't even realize how much she had changed until near the end.  She was a completely different and more confident person that she was at the beginning, and I liked her even more. Aren is a person everyone in Darmid fears - he has magic and that means he's bad.  The people of Darmid really don't look any farther than that.  Aren was a small problem for me.  He was so hung up on what he was doing and why that I got just a little tired of his internal dialog.  It was an important part of the story, and much of it gave me some good insight into why he was doing things, but I heard it one too many times is all. Rowan's journey was incredibly exciting.  It was a grand adventure and she got to see and experience so many new things.  It was everything she had ever dreamed about - but terrifying at the same time.  I loved the creatures they came across - Ruby especially was very fun.  I will be keeping an eye out for book two (sometime 2015 I believe) so that I can see how Rowan's journey continues. *This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

Boy, I had no problem at all just falling right into this book and the world the author created from the very first page. I would have loved to find a comfortable spot and read this book straight through. Rowan was a very easy protagonist to identify with - who hasn't wondered at some point in their life if this is all there is? She's torn between making her family and friends happy by doing what's expected of a girl her age or going out on her own and seeing what else is out there. With so many YA/NA books having female protagonists waiting for someone to rescue them from their dire circumstances, Rowan was a welcome change with her independence, compassion, sense of adventure, stubbornness, and touch of rebellion. Aren, the male protagonist, came from difficult circumstances and also had some serious family obligations and expectations. I enjoyed seeing how his character developed throughout this book. The author did an excellent job of engaging the senses in her descriptions - the feel of fabric and tree bark, the smell of tea, the color of dresses, the taste of food. I had no problems at all with imagery. If I had to choose something I didn't like about this book, it's the fact that I got to the end and discovered the next book doesn't come out until Winter 2015! This book has something for everyone - fantasy, magic, a hint of fairy tales, dragons, humor, action, adventure, romance. A thoroughly enjoyable debut novel. What a fun book! I was immediately attracted by the book’s beautiful cover, and the story inside did not disappoint. Kate Sparkes has written a lovely fantasy romance with an appealing heroine and a hero who has stolen my heart. I love watching Rowen and Aren change and grow as their relationship deepens. Aren’s struggles with his past, his ties to his family, and his ideas about himself make him especially compelling. The magical creatures and supporting characters Rowen and Aren encounter in their journey are also well-drawn and intriguing. I can’t wait to learn more about these characters and the worlds of Darmish and Tyrea in the next installment.

It's been awhile since a book has actually kept my interest going right until the very end, but Bound did just that. It is extremely well written. Kate Sparkes has a wonderful way of weaving this story, leaving you waiting for more. There's just the right amount of mystery, romance, comedy, action, fantasy and suspense!! I've fallen in love with Rowan's world (and of course the characters). I'm anxiously awaiting the second installment. If you like fantasy novels like Terry Goodkind and Patrick Rothfuss, "Bound" will be right up your ally!!
