Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"A glass in one hand and a pen in the other, Ben's writing deftly captures the passion, humor, and insight from the front line of the global craft brewing revolution." Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, Mikkeller
Library Journal
11/15/2013
There is a vast world of beers beyond the large national brands. Acclaimed British writer McFarland (World's Best Beers: 1000 Unmissable Brews from Portland to Prague) highlights 500 craft brews from around the globe, capturing each in a paragraph in which his delight with the particular beverage is apparent. The book is organized loosely by type of beer and then by geography. Across the chapters, there's sure to be a beer to please nearly everyone. Evocative descriptions aside, the names themselves often captivate: XXYZ Bitter (France), Beelzebub's Jewels (Australia), and Death and Taxes (United States), among others. Many of the beers are not readily available, but McFarland provides URLs for breweries when possible. His writing occasionally veers into an English lad affectation, but he demonstrates genuine respect for the brewers as well as for the range of preferences among his readers. Sidebars, brewery profiles, and other additional information enhance the value of the guide. The lavish use of color photographs is greatly appealing. VERDICT A lively, colorful volume that beer enthusiasts are certain to devour. Highly recommended for public library collections.—Peter Hepburn, Coll. of the Canyons Lib., Santa Clarita, CA
