Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
As with other Bow-Wow books, the text is limited. The objective of this board book is to teach colors, specifically six of them. The approach is clever: Bow-Wow is pulling a sock off a foot. The color is named and the sock is removed to reveal the next sock and yet a different color. The closing page is amusing: The sockless person's bare foot is exposed, and what do you suppose Bow-Wow does? There is only one quibble; the color red is depicted as a dark orange. Perhaps better control of the printing process could have remedied this problem, which may be confusing to young children. This is a companion book to Bow-Wow: 12-Months Running. Kirkus Reviews
The little terrier from the sublimely surreal BowWow Bugs a Bug (2007) has moved to board books, a format wellsuited to his colorful, graphic simplicity. Here BowWow tugs a "Red!" sock off a human foot, revealing an "Orange!" one and so on to "Purple!" and, finally, naked tootsies: "Lick!" In each spread, the lefthand image depicts BowWow beginning to pull the sock, the righthand image showing the sock mostly pulled off with the nextcolored sock beneath it and a quizzical expression on BowWow's face. Simple enough for babies to work on the concept, weird enough to appeal to parental readers again and again. Companion BowWow 12 Months Running (9780152065584) is a little on the complex side for the baby half of the audience. (618 mos.)
