Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of six in the "Grammar All-Star" series, designed to reinforce parts of speech at the elementary level, this edition focuses on adjectives. A bowling tournament called by sportscaster Buzz and his kid reporter and spelling bee winner, Lauren Lewis, is used to interest readers to learn more about adjective usage. Colorful cartoon-like illustrations, frequent sidebar hints, a follow-up activity, and the play-by-play commentary combine to interest readers, as the various uses for adjectives are explained in the sidebar hints and the actual play-by-play of the tournament. Buzz encourages Lauren to use plenty of adjectives in her first experience as an announcer. A follow-up listing of usage rules, a written activity, and its answer key are included. The book is especially useful as a follow-up to a lesson on adjectives for those students having difficulty mastering parts of speech. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Learning about adjectives is fun when kids use this colorful and easy-to-comprehend book based on the game of bowling. Main character Buzz Star, and his sidekick Lauren Lewis who won a spelling bee at her school, set the pace as they broadcast the final game of the Tenpin Tournament. Lauren does an excellent job of using adjectives to describe what she sees at the bowling alley in chapter one. Chapter two reinforces that adjectives are used to answer what kind, which one, and how many of something. Chapter three explains how adjectives are used for comparisons. Ten "Tenpin" sidebars are included in this book from the series "Grammar All Stars: The Parts of Speech." Each sidebar holds a key to important adjective information. A quick referral to the 10 sidebars clues readers in on what adjectives are, where they may be found in a sentence, what question adjectives can answer, how they compare things, and more. Endmatter includes adjective rules, a writing activity, and activity answers. Bright humorous illustrations fill the pages and enhance the text. This book is an excellent supplement to language lessons. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
