Overview

One day Bowser the Hound found the fresh trail of Old Man Coyote and made up his mind that he would run down Old Man Coyote if he had to run his legs off to do it. You know there is nothing in the world Bowser enjoys quite so much as to hunt someone who will give him a long, hard run. Any time he will go without eating for the pleasure of chasing Reddy or Granny Fox, or Old Man Coyote.

Old Man Coyote was annoyed. He was and he wasn't afraid of Bowser the Hound. That is to say he was afraid to fight Bowser, but he wasn't afraid to be hunted by Bowser, because he was so sure that he was smart enough to get away from Bowser. If Bowser had appeared at almost any other time Old Man Coyote wouldn't have been so annoyed. But to have Bowser appear just then made him angry clear through.

You see, he had just started out to get his dinner. . . .

I am a 70 year old man and remember quite well my grandfather telling me stories about Bowser The Hound when I was a child. He made everything so real and verbally painted pictures in my mind I still remember! All of my three children are grown now, but all remember me telling them Bowser The Hound stories. Now, my grandchildren love for me to tell them stories about Bowser. That is 5 generations who grew up on Bowser The Hound and loved it! That within itself is quite a recommendation!

Concerned murmurs. That was what I woke to. I shifted, sift fabric brushing my skin. Slowly, I pulled myself into an upright position, wincing. What had happened? Everything seemed like one gigantic blur. Tidbits of memories came to me. Moleface. Pain. Scoria. Yelling.
"Oh, good! You're awake!"
I looked over. A white-garbed girl stood beside my bed.
"You broke two ribs, y'know. Nearly lost an eye, too." She chittered, fussing over me.
"How-how long have I been--asleep?" I questioned warily.
"Oh. . . It's been a day since the attack. . ."
My eyes widened. "Attack? What attack?"
The nurse sighed. "Right after you--well. . ." She waved her hand at my wounds, "After that, a Shadow Troop attacked."
I licked my lips in horror slowly, looking away. "Was anyone hurt?" I nearly dreaded the reply.
"Yes. We lost three recruits and two were grievously injured."
"Who?"
"A scrawny kid named Chert and a girl, Pitaya."
I swallowed bile rising in my throat, feeling sick. Chert. . . He didn't belong in a war. . .
"Are you alright? You look quite pale." The nurse put her hand to my forehead.
"I'm fine." I mumbled. I drew a deep breath. "Could I--Could I be alone?"
"Of course." The nurse smiled sweetly and rose. "If you need me, just call. My name's Chicory."
I smiled weakly. "I will."
She left and I sank back down against my pillow. Everything ached now. Maybe joining the war hadn't been the best idea. . .
[ More comments means the next chapter comes out faster! ]
~ Haunted &#65430<_>mmortal
