'FIRE Box 598' by Joe Corso is a true story about a man's personal experience of being on duty on the fateful night when 12 fire personnel met with a tragic end. The book is an account by account description of what happened on that fateful night of October 17, 1966. The book is very emotional and it touches you. The author's experience of watching the 12 men die while trying to extinguish a fire and how it personally affects him is narrated well in the book. It is also a revelation on how important our lives are and how we don't realize it till we have someone close to us dying.
"FIRE Box 598" touched me very much because it also has a very subtle spiritual angle to it. Life and death always evoke a sacred and spiritual feeling inside you. Losing someone in your life makes you understand how precious people and relationships are. It made me aware of how important every breath of mine is and how alive I feel with every breath. It is also an eye opener on how we don't value anyone and then suddenly they are not in our lives anymore. The sadness that goes with the family of the deceased is again very personal. It is a feeling that flips through everybody's mind when a death occurs. I felt the narration was very effective. The range of emotions that flip through the author's mind while being part of the tragedy are effectively conveyed.
