Box Office Poison

Overview

This epic story of Sherman, Dorothy, Ed, Stephen, Jane, and Mr. Flavor is not to be missed. Alex Robinson's completely natural and inspiring knack for dialogue has made his story of dreary jobs, comic books, love, sex, messy apartments, girlfriends (and the lack thereof), undisclosed pasts, and crusty old professionals one of the most delightful and whimsical graphic novels to hit the stands in years.

    My first Graphic Novel

I had never even picked up a graphic novel before reading this, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The characters were real, relatable (a bit too much so), and very funny. Its a pretty thick book, but I was left wanting more.

    Black-and-White Brilliance

To put those who may read these words in my own mindset, I will reveal at the outset that I am a hopeless fan of Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarrantino, John Hughes, and any other filmmaker that is not afraid to allow talking heads and static cameras tell their story. I am also an ardent detractor of reality television and all its many manifestations. I find the pseudo-reality that invariably arises from putting people on camera is both ridiculous and pointless. Some may think Box Office Poison to be something like reality television (at least those who have not read it but have at least heard about it). It is as far from it as Pluto is from the Sun. What we have here is a quiet, unassuming tale of REAL LIFE. To be honest, I was a slave to mainstream comics for many years, buying without thinking titles such as Superman, Batman, Catwoman, the million-odd X-titles that grew and died over time, and there truly is nothing irreprably wrong with mainstream comics, as I still pick up the stray mainstream title now and again. Then, about six months ago, or perrhaps a bit longer, a friend of mine pressed a copy of Box Office Poison into my hands and told me to, "Read it. Don't make excuses, don't question me, just read it and tell me what you think after you're done." So, respecting this person greatly, I followed her advice and read it. I thought that its length would be a detractor and I would find myself unable to finish it for boredom, but by the end, contrary to my initial thoughts, I was sad to see that last page go by. I still wanted to see more of the lives of these characters, I wanted to see inside Ed's life instead of being given a simple description and a message of hope, that everything is alright for him, wil be alright. I wanted to see how Sherman and all the other people would spend the rest of their Gen-X lives. In short, I wanted the book to be 10,000 pages long and have a sequel waiting for me at the end of the road. This is as essential reading as Maus, in its own way.

    Box Office Smash Success

I have been one of the fortunate people to be following Box Office Poison since the start of the series when it was a mini -comic. Seeing this culmination of the 21 individual issues in this huge book and holding it in my hands confirms what fantastic characters and stories Alex Robinson can write and draw. This is a must have for anyone that enjoys a funny, sad, surprising, truthful story of believable characters that could be people in your life. This isn't a graphic novel just for people who like graphic novels, but for people who enjoy great fiction storytelling. I hope many will request this book and B&N will carry many copies!
