Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Even today, Gertrude Chandler Warner's classic Depression-era story of Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden -- four hungry children who transform an abandoned boxcar into a home -- fascinates us because, regardless of age, we all long to be on our own. This 60th Anniversary Edition of Warner's classic sports a bright new cover and many new features but retains L. Kate Deal's original silhouettes.
Publishers Weekly
Children's NOTES Boxcar Children Redux Two titles mark a landmark anniversary of a classic series. The first, The Boxcar Children 60th Anniversary Edition by Gertrude Chandler Warner, illus. by L. more from this reviewer

The Boxcar Children is a story that will stay with the reader for years!

I read this book as a child - only the first in the series - but it has been a favorite book for 40 years plus now! It delightfully engages the reader's imagination and holds you captive till the outcome. It was a must read for my children and they equally loved it. We highly recommend it.

A review of the book, The Boxcar Children

I am a sixth grade student in Glendale Arizona

    Title: The Boxcar Children
    Author: Gertrude Chandler Warner

The main character of the book is Henry James. He seems to be eleven years old, and just an ordinary kid. He is a hard worker who tries to take care of the children. He works in the garden at someone¿s house to earn money. He needs to feed himself, and his sisters Jessie, Violet and Benny his brother.

The story starts with four kids that sleep at a bakery and over hear the chef is going to do something to them. So, they snuck out at night to try to escape. They ran into the woods and found a boxcar. They decided to live in it. The kids went through a lot of different situations in order to survive. One time they went to look for silverware to eat their food with and found a lot of it. Another time Henry took the children to pick cherries with him to earn money. The story ends with a man taking the children home, because they needed a real home.

The setting of the story takes place in the woods with a rusty boxcar. There is a river next to the boxcar.

Four orphans that are homeless are looking for a home. They want to make it on their own. The children experience a lot of different circumstances through their life.

My opinion: I like this book because it was easy to read and it made sense. It seemed like a good book because the kids were adventurous like me.

My first connection is: The boxcar children go hunting for treasure. I went hunting for treasure once. My mom and I went rock hunting and we found some really cool rocks.

Another connection I have is: The boxcar children are orphans. I can connect to the world because there are orphans in the world too.

Similar books I know are: The Hardy Boy Mysteries, Sugar Creek Gang Mysteries, and the Nancy Drew Mysteries

Dear reader, If you are asking yourself " should I really buy this book?", don't hesitate... buy it! It has excitement, adventure, and it's original. But, it is a pretty, short book. But it is very cheap too. What is it... 4 bucks? You make the decision yourself but I recommend you read it A NOTE FROM ME: Be you! Express YOUR inner character and find ways You can change the world! P.S. If you like my reviews( which have special "feel good" quotes) go to Nancy Drew books. I write reviews there.

    Boxcar Children Series #1

I remember reading this series in the early 1970's. I don't remember all of the titles, but I do remember reading it, and I enjoyed them. I recently found out that my sister is now reading the books with my niece. My sister also read the series as a child. I think they are great stories to share with all young children.
