Children's LiteratureThe Boxer is a breed of dog that originated in Germany. The breed was probably named for the playful punching of paws, which is similar to a human boxer punching at another person. The breed is related to the Bulldog. The book begins with a section on quick facts about the Boxer. Like other books in the "Learning about Dogs" series, it is then broken into five short chapters with concise readable sub-sections that offer facts and information regarding the Boxer. High color photos add to the text throughout the book. A double-page, color photo of a Boxer follows. In the photo, the main features of a Boxer are labeled. Additional helpful pages include quick facts about all dogs, a glossary, added resources, useful addresses and Internet sites for learning more about the Boxer. The format of this book makes it easy to understand the history, the uses and the care of the breed. 2001, Capstone Press, $21.26. Ages 8 to 10. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
