Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
PW praised the author's ``frank treatment of teenage concerns'' in this affecting tale of a high-school triumvirate's incipient breaking apart. Ages 12-up. (Aug.)
School Library Journal
Gr 9-12-- Plagued by acne that makes him look like the man in the moon--``lunar, bare, ruined''--high-school senior Nick faces change. Secure in his longtime friendship with Frieda and Kevin, he has always viewed his life with an easy, self-deprecating sense of humor. After a summer in California visiting his divorced mother, Kevin returns--cool, handsome and a womanizer--and makes Nick feel more inadequate than ever. And Nick, who has enjoyed being with Frieda as a twosome rather than the usual threesome, doubts Frieda's interest in him will last. But Frieda indeed reciprocates Nick's feelings, and the two begin a tender love affair. As they draw closer, they help Kevin survive his unhappy home situation and the changes in his own life, and the love among the threesome is even stronger as they face separation after high school. Koertge's wit, ear for dialogue, affection for, and understanding of young people makes what might have been trite and maudlin instead satisfying, sweet, and often hilarious. The story has likable secondary characters--Nick's parents, a poet mother and a cop father, love each other and their son. However, Koertge's fine track record, instead of displaying growth, shows instead that he is in danger of repeating himself; the characters are similar to those of his other books, with the hero thinking he is the pits until some terrific girl falls for him and he sees his own value. No matter, perhaps, for this has all the charm of his others, too, and YA's will enjoy it. --Marjorie Lewis, Scarsdale Junior High School, NY
