Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Strongly reminiscent of Ann Turner's recent Time of the Bison , this too is a beautifully written story about an artistic prehistoric boy. Adopted as an infant by the kind old woman Kala, Tao does not know his father. His mother, Kala tells him, gave him his gift for seeing beauty``the thing that makes you different from others.'' Determined to paint, despite the taboo against it, Tao is gradually cast from the clan. Now on the outside, he begins to view their superstitions skeptically: demons do not dwell in the forbidden slough, after all; and the wolf dog, Ram, despised by the clan, becomes Tao's devoted friend. This is an exciting, fabulously descriptive story set against violent times. Denzel's knowledge of the Stone Age enhances the action; moreover, with his tender, somewhat melancholy insights into ostracism and loyalty, he transcends the period. Ages 8-12. (September)

Meet the Author

Justin Denzel has been intrigued with history and caves for many years. As a young man he worked at the American Museum of Natural History, where he studied prehistoric cultures. Later, while training for the Army in the days before World War II, he explored the mammoth underground caves of Tennessee.

Mr. Denzel's first professional writing experience came in Alaska, where he wrote and edited a periodical, The Alaskan. During World War II he wrote for Nature magazine and for Stars and Stripes.

Mr. Denzel is the author of many books for young readers, including the well-loved Boy of the Painted Cave, published in 1988 by Philomel. He lives in Clifton, New Jersey, with his wife, Josephine.

    radical book!

This book ROCKED MY SOCKS OFF! It is an amazing story about a brave and courageous boy named Toa with his wolf dog named Ram. He grew up with a gal named Kala because his mother died and he doesnt know his dad. In the story there are many other characters along with Tao, such as Volt, Graybeard, Garth, and many many more! When i read this book i couldnt put it down. Everytime you say " ok, 1 more page and im done." it ends up 2 hours later half way done with the book! I loved it and i know you will too. Not to mention the mystery of who his father is!....I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS ENGAGING BOOK!

    Tao is the bomb

I think that Tao is a brave boy. He is also a cripple. He survives with Ram and Greybeard teaches him how to paint. I found this book interesting and it kept my interest.

    Exciting, descriptive story

I read this book for seventh-grade English-it is great! I really liked the descriptions of how Graybeard, the medicine man, mixed paints and created cave pictures. Trust me-put this book on your reading list! :-)

The boy and his forbidden stories

When the first time I heard about this book when I was in the 6th grade, I thought, lame, another boring book to read. But when my teacher stared reading the book out loud, I got into it. The thrills, the on-edge excitment. I loved it. I knew right away that I wanted that book. So the next day we went to the local library and checked it out. I was reading ahead just so I could hear it again in class. And since my school has a block schedual, I had to wait two days until I heard the story agian. But in the end, the story came out to be the best!
