With marvelous illustrations and simple text, psychologist Rob Goldblatt tells the story of a young boy who tries to avoid sadness by getting rid of everything that might at some future point cause him unhappiness. He jettisons his toys (they might break), his family (they don't always do what he likes), his friends (they might disappoint him), and even his faithful pets (because how will he feel when they die?). His final move of unscrewing the light bulb (because it will burn out eventually, thus making him sad) leaves him literally in the dark. And finally, sitting by all by himself in his dark room, he understands—by shutting out sadness he is shutting out happiness as well. So he welcomes everyone and everything he banished back into his life with open arms. "And he lived happily ever after. And sadly. And laughing hysterically a whole lot....downright miserable now and again....And totally loving life. Ever, ever after." A touching story with a message, though perhaps a bit too much of a message for the younger end of the group the book is aimed at.
