Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Humor is a necessity for toddler parents who will be reading the books their children will come to love over and over. Rarely do rhythm, rhyme, and humor come together as well as they do in the works of Sandra Boynton. Her four best-sellers come packed together in this volume, and each satisfies this age group's developmental needs. The Going to Bed Book calms the restless and will help them sleep; Horns to Toes and Opposites introduce concepts with playfulness and But Not the Hippopotamus is a silly first story about rejection. These titles have endured and succeeded with toddlers for almost two decades. 1998, Little Simon, Ages 2 to 5, $19.99. Reviewer: Susie Wilde

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

Everything in my order was great, BUT

Everything in this order was great-I am a children's librarian and I should know. However, I will never order online from B&N ever again. B&N sent me a $10 gift card as an appreciation gift for being a good customer. Also, the day I placed my order they sent me a $5 online gift card. So, I select my items and my order came to $66 before I hit the order button and after I hit the order button it came to $81. with a big thank you. Thanks for nothing. Amazon from now for me.

The packaging of 4 board books together is a great idea. The stories are all pretty short, so I can usually read all 4 books to my 1 year old son in 1 sitting. He loves when I make all the animal sounds.

    Great baby gift

This is my standard baby gift, especially for a girl. My 7, 5 and 3 year olds voted for it hands down, especially when they saw it included Blue Hat, Green Hat. My kids always got a giggle out of that silly turkey dressing himself in crazy ways when they were toddlers. Love these books.

The Boynton Greatest Hits are Great!!

Bought this set as a gift for new parents for their new little baby girl. My daughter, now 12, will not give up her Boynton's. We have them saved for when she has children of her own. These books are fantastic to read over and over again. My husband & I used to have them memorized!

What a Hoot! And a Giggle - and more!

Both my children have loved this set of four books. They are seriously funny to the toddler set! Red Hat Green Hat was the first book my son ever 'read' out loud. He still loves to read it to little sister.
