Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Readers will wish they could have this much fun with their neighbors and friends. . . . As with the previous books, this title can stand alone.”
School Library Journal
“Another funny installment in this sweet-natured series.”–Booklist
Publishers Weekly
It's the Hatfords versus the Malloys (again) in Newbery-winner Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's The Boys Return. This time it's spring break and the Hatford boys team up with the Benson brothers to plan a ruthless prank against the sisters, schemers in their own right. (Sept.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
The friendly feud continues in this the seventh installment of the Hatfords vs. the Malloys. It is spring break and the Benson brothers have returned to Buckman, West Virginia to visit their pals the Hatfords. It doesn't take long for the boys to set up a practical joke to scare the Malloy sisters. With some clever storytelling, they convince the girls that their house is haunted by a vengeful ghost who returns every March 22—two days hence. What the boys do not expect is for the girls to retaliate with a joke of their own. As if that were not enough excitement, the town is being stalked by a hungry cougar and all the kids join forces to plot its capture. Other than keeping the dozen characters straight, this is a light, breezy story sure to appeal to kids who like "stories about kids like us." Fans of the series will welcome this latest addition, which can stand independently. 2001, Delacorte Press, $15.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-The seventh installment in the series about the feuding boys and girls of Buckman, WV, takes place during spring vacation, when the Bensons, who have traded houses with the Malloys for a year, return to town for a visit. The five Benson brothers stay with their friends the Hatfords. For Caroline Malloy and her two sisters, it has been an eventful and fun year thinking up dastardly deeds and stunts to pull on the four Hatford brothers. Now, adventures really roll as the boys devise a ghostly trick to pull on the girls, who know how to retaliate. Readers will wish they could have this much fun with their neighbors and friends. There is even a hint of romance, and a cougar on the loose. As with the previous books, this title can stand alone, although they are more fun read consecutively.-Kay Bowes, Concord Pike Library, Wilmington, DE Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    My favorite!

This is also my favorite book out of all the others because the Benson boys clearly think they have everything in their control, when the girls are actually the ones manipulating their whole plot. I wish they were included in more of the books.

The Boys Return is a very well worded book with many details in character and in settings. This book is a challenging book mostly for a child in 5th or 4th grade. The book is a bout two families a family with all girls and a family with all boys. The two familes dont get along very well but the girls always seem to be the ones to win. The boys decided to get back. Old friends come back from spring break and thats when the boys get the old friends to help them. They start to make a plot of ideas to do to the girls. They finally get an idea and the trick begans

    Yeah more boys!

I think this book was excellent! I loved it since I first picked it up! I hope others will read it because I thought this book was funnier and in a way cuter than the rest, and for those that read it isn't funny yet cute what happens to Eddie? Also I'm in highschool and love to read and yet a 6 grade book caught my attention, thats how good I think this book is.
