Editorial Reviews

Hazel Rochman
The slapstick, mischief, and trickery in this good-humored story about getting your own back will keep middle grade readers laughing. Furious that the kids in the new family across the river are all girls, the Hartford brothers start a campaign to drive the Malloys out of their West Virginia town. What the boys don't realize is that the girls can give as good as they get. The reversals are both wild and banal: the girls' tricks range from stealing jockey shorts off the line to pretending to be dead; the boys have a great time with Halloween-type monster disguises and with catching the girls in embarrassing moments. The story is told from the point of view of the fourth-grader in each family. They can't help admiring each other's tricks; they even wonder--momentarily--if it might be fun to be friends. Unlike Naylor's books about Alice, the embarrassment here isn't mixed with anguish. Shame is just a spur for gleeful revenge. And they do get revenge. Both sides. Again and again.

    Love it!

I totally loved this book! Naylor captures the classic no win situation of boys against girls in a neighborhood war. The parents who are completely oblivious to their kids war add to humor. This book is great for all ages. The kids ages 8-11 but I like them and I'm 13!!

Elementary students will love this book because of the funny things the Hartford brothers and the Mallory sisters do to each other to win the battle: from dead fish to floating heads! A humorous book that you will make you laugh till the very end.

    Awesome Book

This book is about the Hatford boys who live across the river from a new family that's just moved in. All the kids in the new family are girls. This book is about the boys and the girls having a war - a tricky war. The youngest sister is named Caroline. She is fun and adventurous. She likes to pretend like I do - so I like that a lot! My favorite part of the book is when the sisters dumped Caroline in the river and pretended she was dead to freak out the boys. It worked and the boys were really freaked out. I would recommend this book to girls and boys who are between 8 and 13 years old. I think anyone who has a brother or a sister will really like this book. It made me laugh a lot, and it was fast to read.

    Funny Read-Aloud for Kids

As a 4th grade teacher, I am always on the lookout for fun books to read aloud to my students. I ALWAYS begin each school year reading this book, along with the others in this series. Boys Start the War is a funny, fast-paced, well-written story about a feud between the boys in one family and the girls in another. The two groups continuously play hysterical pranks on each other, and even though I've read this series numerous times, I still laugh out loud at certain parts.

    Great book

This is an awesome book. There is a whole sieris of these books but it doesnt matter what order you read them in because every book is about the boys and the girls pranking one and other. The reason they are good books is because i love to see wgat prank the teams will think of next. (FYI i am rooting for the boys team!) They pull off some pretty good tricks. Read this hilarious book right now!
