Overview

Featuring boy heroes from around the world and across the centuries, this is a fine companion volume to the popular Girls Who Rocked the World series. In the same spirit of celebration, Boys Who Rocked the World profiles already famous heroes along with those who have been overlooked by history or not yet credited for their contributions. Included in the lineup of the famous are King Tut, pharaoh of Egypt at age 9; Elvis Presley, winner of a singing contest at 10; Pablo Picasso, accepted into the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona at 14; and Tiger Woods, the youngest golfer to win the U.S. Junior Amateur at 15. The lesser-knowns are 30 boys from across America who answer the question “How will you rock the world?” By comparing the dreams of these “boys next door” to those of famous individuals, the book shows today’s boys that they, too, can make their mark in the world.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The accomplishments of Thomas Alva Edison, Elvis Presley and Bill Gates number among the Boys Who Rocked the World: From King Tut to Tiger Woods by the editors of Beyond Words Publishing, illus. by Lar DeSouza. This spiral-bound book features 30 boys, past and present, who have made a difference in society before reaching the age of 20. For example, at the age of 15, Louis Braille "had just switched on the light of learning for blind people forevermore." For further inspiration, there is a section called, "Boys Who Are Rocking the World Right Now!" (July) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Learn about how King Tut became King, Louis Braille created the Braille reading system, Stephen King started writing his first story for his mom, and Sammy Sosa learned to play baseball in a empty lot with a stuffed sock. This well written book creates a sense of relationship to the reader in explaining how famous men actually began their lives as normal everyday boys, and how they each had different dreams and goals that they always kept in front of them to chase and eventually attained. Throughout the book boys ages 8 to 12 are asked, "How they will rock the World?" Many of the answers are encouraging and inspiring for kids reading this book. The book is great read for children of all ages. 2001 Beyond Words Publishing, $8.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Christy Oestreich
