Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Today's children are quite aware of issues concerning the environment. As part of the "True Book Series," this title attempts to explain to upper elementary students one of the worst environmental disasters in the United States. In order to capture the attention of readers, the opening page presents two true-or-false statements that will be answered somewhere in the rest of the text. The first chapter explains the events that began on April 20, 2010 when the rig exploded and caught fire. Earlier problems at the site are reviewed in the second chapter. There is also a page recalling the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Chapter three recounts the many attempts to deal with the oil spill and efforts to stop the leaking oil. It also describes the problems for animals and humans as a result of the spill. The last two chapters deal with the efforts to clean up the area and what the after effects will be on the entire Gulf region. The text is further enhanced with many colored photos, a timeline, a page of statistics and unusual facts, highlighted by arrows, on almost every page. Additional resources include a glossary, index, bibliography, web sites, organizations and places to visit. Teachers should find this a helpful aid in presenting this event to their pupils who will also be able to use it for their own research. The relatively high cost may prove to be a problem with purchase. If other material is already available then buying this volume is not really necessary. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
