    Brahms Four Symphonies, The definitive set.

    Brahms Four Symphonies are amongst the greatest symphonies ever written, and these performances by Abbado are glorious examples of them in excellent digital sound. I have never grown tired of listening to Brahms' warm, melodic and often beautifully dramatic symphonies, and I personally own complete sets by Barbirolli on Angel, Walter on CBS/SONY, Mackerras' Digital set on Telarc, several complete performances by Karajan on DGG including a Digital Cycle, Dorati on Mercury, Klemplerer on EMI, Jochum on EMI, as well as single CD's of other great conductors. All of these performances and interpretations mentioned are excellent, but so enamored have I been of these symphonies that I recently purchased Symphony #1 by Abbado which also contained the Song of Fates (Goethe) as a fillup. What I experienced was a great performance, the equal of the other performances above, but with the clearest digital sound I had ever heard with these large symphonic works. Here one can appreciate simultaneously `the forest and the trees' of these great works, and the warmth and depth is in abundance as well. I then went out and purchased the complete set. These Brahms Symphonies by Abbado are likely to be considered the most satisfying performances ever recorded: great performances and the most transparent sound. The complete Abbado set is at midprice (individual issues at Full Price), but contains 4 CD's, including a host of Overtures and Choral pieces by Brahms, beautifully done.
