Anyone willing to invest in Deutsche Grammophon's 46-CD box set of the complete works of Johannes Brahms should expect the highest musical quality, as well as exceptional audio reproduction, because both needs are met here, in abundance. All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
Anyone willing to invest in Deutsche Grammophon's 46-CD box set of the complete works of Johannes Brahms should expect the highest musical quality, as well as exceptional audio reproduction, because both needs are met here, in abundance. Of course, the performers are drawn from the label's roster of legendary stars, so the work of Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic dominate the orchestral recordings. There is, however, a greater variety of vocalists, chamber players, and pianists in this package, including soprano Barbara Bonney, baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the Amadeus Quartet, Quartetto Italiano, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, pianists Maurizio Pollini, Daniel Barenboim, and Wilhelm Kempff, and many other superb artists who created a rich legacy of Brahms recordings in the last half of the 20th century. Because of the space constraints the box is a cube just over five inches in height, width, and depth, the CDs are stored in card stock sleeves and the booklet provides only detailed track listings, no notes. This may frustrate listeners who want background information, but this set offers an amazing amount of music at a substantial discount, so some corners were cut. Still, only the most curmudgeonly critic would fuss about the selections or complain about the booklet, while admirers of Brahms' music will find much to enjoy in this special limited edition. Highly recommended.

    Excellent Recordings

This complete Brahms set of CDs is excellent. The recordings are by some of the most famous musicians and orchestras in the world and their individual performances are all top-notch.

The cost of the set is well worth it - it is far beyond getting your money's worth.

As a professional musician (composer and conductor) I higly recommend this complete set of Brahms' music to everyone, whether you are a professional or a lay person.

Top quality label at bargain prices: a winning combination!

This limited edition collection of all the works of Johannes Brahms from Deutsche Grammophon features excellent performances by many top name artists. While DG does have some newer artist performances available, these are solid with names like Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Karl Bohm, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Daniel Barenboim, Tamas Vasary, Wilhelm Kempff, Pinchas Zukerman, and Mstislav Rostropovich. The Amadeus Quartet and the Lasalle Quartet are also featured in the chamber works. Jessye Norman and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are among the featured singers as well as Edith Mathis, Brigitte Fassbaender, and Peter Schreier. Unlike many of the budget collections available elsewhere, these are star performers. While there is a handy booklet with all of the tracks listed with times and credits, there is little else in the way of written information, which is a pity. The cds are housed in carboard holders with no artwork and just track information, also a pity, but 46 quality cds at this price is not to be sneered at, so I would recommend this set to all Brahms fans. Even if you have many of the works on other recordings, as I do, this set will not disappoint.
