As of this writing, I have purchased six volumes of the Brahms Four Hand Piano Music series on Naxos - Volumes 3-4 and Volumes 10-13. Of those six volumes, Volume 3 clearly contains the most impressive music [the Sonata for Two Pianos Op. 34b will knock your socks off]. This Volume 4, however, may have the most felicitous combination of music quality and performance quality. Silke-Thora Matthies and Christian Köhn here play with flawless ensemble and with greater naturalness and expressiveness than they exhibit on Volume 3 [which actually was recorded later]. The music, of course, is magnificent - if the only Brahms orchestral music you know is the symphonies, by all means get to know these two serenades, either in these four hand piano arrangements or in their original orchestral form. This is life-affirming music, played here with manifest enthusiasm and joy. Five stars - a truly splendid recording.
