Brahms: Lieder

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
Possessing a voice big enough to soar effortlessly over a huge Wagnerian orchestra, Jessye Norman is one of those rare singers who is also able to channel that vocal power into the intimate realm of song with the greatest control and subtlety. Norman's multi-hued soprano, with its rich depth into the mezzo range, is perhaps most ideally suited to the often dark and melancholic music of Brahms. In this budget-priced two-CD collection of 52 songs spanning Brahms's career -- roughly a quarter of his complete lieder -- Norman concentrates on lyrics that offer a young woman's perspective on love.
Brahms chose a great number of folksong texts of this type, giving them relatively simple strophic settings that tenderly imagine the romantic sorrows of village maidens, but he also was drawn to poems of Goethe, Mörike, and Rückert, as well as Ophelia's songs from Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Recorded in 1981 and 1982 with pianist Daniel Barenboim, these are impressive performances, especially near the beginning of the second disc when Wolfram Christ adds his viola to Norman's warm tones in the two serenely soothing songs of Op. 91. The rapturous "Sapphische Ode" and the lively "Zigeuenerlieder" Gypsy Songs are just a few of the many other heights Norman and her partners reach in this outstanding overview of Brahms's vocal art.
