The first work, the B Major Trio, Op. 8, was initially written in 1854, when Brahms was only 21, and was his first published piece of chamber music. But Brahms was an exacting craftsman, and in his twilight years, the youthful Op. 8 no longer passed muster. It underwent a ruthless revision in 1890, seven years before the composer's death, and in the process was transformed from a good work into a great one. He left the first few measures untouched, however, and one can understand why: The expansive opening melody is ineffably beautiful, with each instrument taking its turn in layered entrances -- piano, cello, violin. And listening to Eroica play the passage, one marvels at the way they allow the theme to unfold with unaffected elegance and grace -- in comparison to the Beaux Arts Trio's classic account, where the playing seems relatively fragile and less fluid. Nearly 30 years passed between the birth of Op. 8 and Brahms's next attempt at a piano trio, the C Major Trio, Op. 87, of 1882, which is the companion piece here. Not surprisingly, the C Major Trio is the more mature and grander of the two, and it certainly has its share of gorgeous moments as well. Eroica's performance is equally warm and rich, with luxurious, full textures and sweeping melodies. Two arrangements of short Brahms pieces by the trio's cellist, Sara Sant'Ambrogio, round out the program on the lighter side. A Hungarian Dance adds a touch of Gypsy fire, and "Wegenlied" the famous Lullaby closes the disc with exquisite tenderness. They are attractive encores to this fine release -- one that will only enhance the growing reputation of this up-and-coming and gifted trio.
