Overview

There's a rich repertory for piano quintet encompassing masterworks by Dvorák, Franck, Elgar, Fauré, Shostakovich, and many others. And it was Schumann's brilliant Quintet in E-flat Major that started the craze. Schumann uses the rich combination of piano and string quartet to create music that has a startling balance between symphonic power and confessional intimacy. The slow movement's halting, funereal march is hauntingly beautiful, and the relentless running scales of the scherzo are so exciting that in concert they often inspire applause and bravos, though there's still another great movement yet to come. Brahms's Quintet is a darker work: Schumann's scherzo was exuberant and playful, Brahms's is anxious and obsessive. Schumann's work ends in joy, Brahms's ends with a tragic race -- a desperate, pulse-quickening scramble to the finish line. On this budget-priced recording, Hungarian pianist Jenö Jandó and the Kodály Quartet give exciting, polished, and intensely satisfying accounts of both quintets.
