Brahms: The 4 Symphonies

All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
The technology to create vibrant multichannel recordings was in its fledgling stage in the 1970s, but PentaTone has released several vintage performances in the hybrid SACD format that show how advanced reproduction really was for the time. Recorded in 1976, Kurt Masur's set of Johannes Brahms' four symphonies with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is a fine example of quadraphonic reproduction, the precursor to surround sound, and the DSD mastering gives these splendid performances a new lease on life. As far as the interpretations go, they are solid but rather conventional readings that will please traditionalists, and the inclusion of the "Tragic Overture" and the "Academic Festival Overture" as filler make this triple-SACD package similar to many other sets of the Brahms symphonies on the market. But being conventional doesn't preclude excellence, and Masur and this historic ensemble deliver Brahms' music with genuine passion, rich sonorities, and exceptional musicality. Any listener who needs a solid set of these works will be satisfied, and audiophiles will be impressed by the wide dynamic range and the depth of the sound, which are comparable to today's state-of-the-art audio.
