Brahms: The Symphonies

Editorial Reviews

Gramophone - Rob Cowan
Where Berglund really scores -- and this observation applies in equal measure to all four symphonies -- is in the way he keeps salient musical lines well to the fore, always with a view to clarifying musical argument... Berglund's acute sensitivity to harmonic movement informs his tempo relations, which means that nothing jars: you always hear the sense of his thinking. And his attention to dynamic detail such as the difference between forte and fortissimo, etc. is every bit as keen as Harnoncourt's. So, who are Berglund's likely takers? Those who fancy aerated Brahms, beardless and athletic, but flexible, should certainly savor this set.
